The Capstone Philosophy takes a Big Picture perspective of alcohol/drug abuse. While the definition of chemical dependency or addiction is “the continued use of alcohol/drugs in spite of negative consequences” the Capstone’s definition is much bigger. Our definition of the problem is about which road the young man walks on. The road of darkness (we call it the road to the Wasteland of Ruin) or the road of light (we call it the road to the Promise Land of Dreams). The two roads include the condition of: relationships with the Lord, relationships with family and friends, morality, character, life’s purposes, work ethic, discovery of gifts and talents, and more. If a young man were to complete the Capstone program, stop using alcohol/drugs completely, but continue to walk in the dark (pornography, dishonesty, defiance, etc.), we would have failed in our mission. Just like the use of alcohol/drugs is progressive because of the tolerance progression in the brain (takes more of the drug to get the same level of feeling), the consequences of continuing to walk down the road to the Wasteland of Ruin are progressive. Without intervention, the consequences will be catastrophic.
